For more than a decade, Amy Fleming and Ty Borden were the reason a lot of people kept watching Heartland.
They weren’t a TV romance on fast-forward. They were two kids who grew up in front of us. That’s why fans are still making tribute edits, like this one set to Hayley Taylor’s “No More Wishing,” uploaded back in 2012.
Built Slowly, On Purpose
When Ty (Graham Wardle) showed up at Heartland, he was a guarded kid on probation. He’d been sent to juvenile detention for attacking his abusive stepfather. Amy had just lost her mother, Marion, who died in the pilot while rescuing Spartan.
Neither of them was ready for anything easy. So the show didn’t give them easy.
Look at the timeline:
- Season 1: first kiss (“Coming Together”)
- Season 6: engaged by the river (“Great Expectations”)
- Season 8: married in the finale, Amy riding in on Spartan (“Written in Stone”)
- Season 9: Ty graduates as a vet (“Begin Again”)
- Season 10: Lyndy is born at home on the ranch (“Greater Expectations”)
That’s ten seasons to get from a kiss to a family. Then they started building a house of their own on the ranch.
Then It Ended in One Scene
The Season 13 finale left Ty shot in the side. A poacher fired at a wolf near the half-built house, and Ty pushed Amy down. He seemed to recover.
Then came the Season 14 premiere, “Keep Me in Your Heart,” on January 10, 2021.
That morning, Ty told Amy he felt “weird.” Later, she asked him to put Spartan back in his pen. He collapsed outside on the ranch. Amy and Jack ran to him. He was already gone.
The cause was a blood clot after surgery. There were no last words and no hospital goodbye. The story jumped ahead a year, to the family scattering his ashes.
Thirteen seasons to build it. One scene to end it.
What Amy Lost
Ty wasn’t just a popular character. He was Amy’s equal. He called her out when she was stubborn. He understood her bond with horses, but he had his own path, his own opinions, and his own plans.
“Amy hasn’t known a life without Ty,” Amber Marshall told TV Insider.
The show didn’t pretend she bounced back. Amy stopped taking client horses. For a year, she rode Harley out to the house they never got to finish, every day. Jack and Tim watched and worried.
Marshall described it to TV, eh? like this: Amy “is numb to it for many months, then has strong guilt for not doing more to prevent it.”
Her grief was mostly quiet, until it wasn’t. At the fishing cabin, she finally breaks: “He’s gone, Grandpa. And he’s not coming back. It’s not fair.”
Why It Happened
The decision came from Wardle. “I felt in my heart it was time to move in a new direction,” he told The Canadian Press. Marshall said she found out about two years before the premiere and was hurt at first.
She also asked the writers to show Amy as “a strong mother who puts her daughter before anything else.” They did.
Why Fans Still Rewatch
Heartland had to keep going. On a working ranch, life doesn’t stop.
But Amy and Ty spent years earning a quiet, happy life, and it was taken away the moment they got there. That’s why fans keep going back to the early seasons. The ending came fast. The love story never did.

This was an awesome video 😉 Great song and the couple is amazing—it brought tears to my eyes.
Ty’s death hurt badly. To me, Heartland is about love, primarily Amy’s love interests. The story writers did a great job in the following seasons(I think it’s their best.). Amy tried with two characters and it didn’t work. Now Nathan, I see no need to bring Ty back from the dead. Nathan and Amy really fit and a move to Salt Springs Island is a must.
Good
There will never be another “TyBorden”. There will never be anther Heartland with out Ty and Amy together
I think they should bring Ty back on. They could say that he had to fake his death to protect his family and himself and had to go into witness prtection. Then the person who would be a threat dies and now Ty can come back to his family. But it would have to be Graham Wardle because they have great chemistry together. 😀
