Kelly Reilly Says Monica’s Death Was a ‘Missed Opportunity’ for Dutton Ranch and Marshals

She called it out by name — and hinted that season 2 is already on a list of things to fix.

Beth Dutton did not attend Monica’s funeral. She was not seen at the graveside. In fact, Season 1 of Dutton Ranch never even mentioned that Kayce’s wife—the mother of Beth’s nephew—had died. Her death was not shown on screen; instead, she died quietly of cancer in the first episode of the spinoff show Marshals, before that series had even fully started. Kelly Reilly, the actress who plays Beth, noticed this missing piece.

“I think it was a missed opportunity, quite honestly,” Reilly told TV Insider. “But we’re all both trying to start up these big shows. And I think we can see where there are gaps, and we see where things need to be fixed.”

Addressing the Narrative Gaps

The story gaps are real. Monica Dutton (Kelsey Asbille) died between showsher death revealed in the Marshals premiere rather than dramatized — and the absence of any visible grief on Beth’s end registered as exactly the kind of seam that forms when two interconnected series launch simultaneously without enough coordination. Reilly’s read on it is generous but clear-eyed: they ran out of time, and an important part of the story was missed.

Her explanation for why this was left out makes sense. “I think that happened before our show started in the story,” she said. “I imagine Beth and Rip went to Monica’s funeral. They connected, and then our show started after that.” The series just never filmed it. Reilly said she expects to see Beth “checking in on her brother” Kayce (Luke Grimes) in Season 2, adding, “We just didn’t see it this year.”

Pushing for a Rip and Kayce Reunion

Cole Hauser, who plays Rip, made it clear that he is pushing to fix this. He wants Rip and Kayce to share scenes again—something the original Yellowstone show did with occasional but real warmth. “It would be fun to see Kayce and Rip get along,” Hauser said. “To have a scene where they are actually happy together.” Reilly agreed right away.

A Potential Season 2 Crossover

The setup for that reunion may already be in place. Both Dutton Ranch and Marshals ended their first seasons with abducted sons: Carter (Finn Little), the boy Beth and Rip raised, and Tate (Brecken Merrill), Kayce’s son. Specifically, the show mentioned that Tate was taken to Texas—which is where Dutton Ranch takes place.

When asked if those similar season endings were planned together, Reilly smiled and said, “Maybe.”

She shared even more. “Beth misses her brother,” she said, suggesting the idea of the Duttons coming together to “go find our sons” as a team. This idea is more than just a way to move the story forward. Reilly mentioned co-stars Wes Bentley and Kelsey Asbille, calling the original cast a family, not a promotional line. Both shows have been renewed for second seasons, giving Reilly, Hauser, and creator Taylor Sheridan time to close the gaps they have noticed. Reilly said they already have a list of things to work on with director Christina Voros, writer Taylor Sheridan, the producers, and new showrunner Benjamin Cavell. “So I am looking forward to getting into that,” she said.

The first season of Dutton Ranch is streaming on Paramount+.
