Tom Selleck has spent decades in the public eye. Millions of viewers grew up watching him in the Hawaiian shirts and red Ferrari of Magnum, P.I., while an entire new generation knows him as Police Commissioner Frank Reagan on Blue Bloods.
Yet, the part of his life Tom protects most has never been broadcast on television.
It is the life he built with his wife, British actress Jillie Mack. Married since 1987, the couple has quietly survived the pressures of Hollywood fame, grueling filming schedules, and raising their daughter away from the spotlight.
When asked about the secret to their long marriage, Tom’s answer was remarkably down-to-earth. In a 2014 interview with GQ, he said, “I think love has gotten deeper. Simpler.”
He Kept Going to See Cats—Just to Meet Her
Their romance began in London in the early 1980s while Tom was filming the movie Lassiter. During his downtime, he became strangely obsessed with the West End musical Cats.
His co-star Jane Seymour couldn’t understand why he kept dragging everyone to see the show over and over. But Tom had an ulterior motive: Jillie Mack was starring as Rumpleteazer.
Even though Tom was already an international superstar, asking her out wasn’t easy. In fact, he was so shy backstage that Jillie eventually took the lead, asking him if he wanted to grab a drink.
To make things even better, Jillie wasn’t starstruck at all—she had no idea who he was because her television had been stolen months earlier. What started as dinner dates in London turned into true love, and Jillie soon moved to the United States to be with him.
A Secret Wedding with Polaroid Photos
By 1987, the couple was ready to tie the knot, but they refused to turn their wedding into a Hollywood spectacle.
They married on August 7, 1987, in a tiny chapel near Lake Tahoe. The couple used fake names to book the venue, and to make sure no photographer could secretly snap and sell wedding pictures to tabloids, they only allowed Polaroid photos to be taken.
Tom later explained their secrecy in four simple words: “We wanted some dignity.” It established a rule they have followed ever since: Tom’s work was public, but his family was off-limits.
Walking Away at the Peak of Fame
In 1988, Magnum, P.I. wrapped up after eight wildly successful seasons. That same year, Tom and Jillie welcomed their daughter, Hannah.
Instead of jumping straight into another major TV series or blockbuster movie, Tom did something few stars at their peak would dare to do: he stepped back from the Hollywood grind.
“I quit Magnum to have a family,” Tom told People.
The couple bought a 65-acre ranch outside Los Angeles, trading red carpets and parties for open space, avocado farming, and a normal childhood for Hannah. The ranch became their safe haven, giving Tom the quiet balance he desperately needed away from the relentless cameras.

One reason their marriage has thrived for nearly four decades is mutual independence and respect.
Tom admits he is naturally quiet, while Jillie brings a bright, energetic spark that lights up a room. On their ranch, both have the freedom to spend their days pursuing their own passions before coming together in the evening.
Raising Hannah was also an equal team effort. Rather than following her father into Hollywood, Hannah grew up riding horses, competing as an equestrian, and eventually launching a successful horse-breeding business.

Tom didn’t step back from Hollywood because his career was slowing down—he chose his family while he was one of the most famous men on television.
“My relationships and my ranch keep me sane,” Tom reflected. “Apart from being my wife, she’s my friend.”
