Abby Sciuto Never Had to Become “Normal” on NCIS

The coolest thing about Abby Sciuto on NCIS wasn’t just her goth style, her platform boots, or the coffin sitting in her lab. It was the fact that she stayed the exact same person for 15 years.

On most long-running shows, quirky characters eventually “grow out” of who they are. Abby never did.

A Scientist, Not a Stereotype

Pauley Perrette, who played Abby starting in 2003, actually studied sociology and criminal justice in real life. Because of that real-world background, Abby always felt like a competent, believable forensic scientist rather than a silly TV caricature. She took her cases personally, stood up for what she believed in, and knew her stuff.

Her pigtails, chokers, and band tees weren’t just a costume to make her look edgy. They were simply her style. She wore them for 15 full seasons without ever feeling the need to tone down her look to fit in.

That is surprisingly rare on network TV. Usually, as shows get older, writers smooth down the rough edges of eccentric characters to appeal to a wider audience. NCIS refused to do that with Abby.

A Bond Built on Real Trust

A lot of NCIS‘s heart came from Abby’s relationship with Gibbs (Mark Harmon). Their dynamic worked because it felt earned. Small habits—like Abby greeting him with a sudden hug or her famous obsession with Caf-Pow energy drinks—felt like real, affectionate routines instead of forced running gags.

When Perrette decided to leave the show in Season 15, the writers gave her a respectful sendoff. They didn’t kill her off for shock value. Instead, after the tragic death of MI6 agent Clayton Reeves, Abby chose to leave NCIS to run the charity Reeves had dreamed of starting.

She turned her grief into positive action, which was the most “Abby” thing she could possibly do.

On shows that run for decades, characters often lose their identity. Writers change, and networks sometimes push to make characters appeal to everyone.

Abby never blended in.

She walked onto our screens in 2003 with a distinct look, an open heart, and unmatched skill in the lab—and she walked away 344 episodes later as that exact same person. She proved that you don’t have to become ordinary to be loved by millions of viewers.
