Mark Harmon Returns to NCIS After a Silent Exit — As a Series Regular This Time

In October 2021, Mark Harmon walked away from NCIS after 18 seasons. He didn’t get a big dramatic storyline or a proper farewell. Gibbs simply decided to stay behind in Alaska, and the door quietly closed.

Nearly four years later, Harmon announced on Instagram that he is returning to the franchise. And he isn’t just dropping in for a quick visit. He will be a main cast member for the entire third season of NCIS: Origins.

The prequel follows a young Leroy Jethro Gibbs (played by Austin Stowell) at Camp Pendleton in the early 1990s. Harmon has narrated the show since it started, but Season 3 changes things. Now, Harmon will actually be on screen as the older, present-day Gibbs, stepping into a mystery that connects his past to his present.

It isn’t the return fans spent years hoping for on the original show. Instead of picking up where the Alaska story ended, Origins gives Harmon a new way to play the character. It lets the older and younger versions of Gibbs exist together without one taking over the other.

NCIS: Origins earned its third season by keeping old fans happy while bringing in new ones. Stowell made the younger Gibbs his own, giving the producers enough confidence to bring Harmon back without worrying he would overshadow the new lead.

Harmon hasn’t said much about why he decided to return. But taking on a full season with a mystery that spans every episode isn’t a quick favor or a last-minute decision. This was carefully planned.
