Mark Harmon walked away from NCIS in October 2021 after 18 seasons, exiting mid-episode in a way that felt less like a finale and more like a door quietly closing. No send-off, no farewell storyline. Gibbs simply drove away on a river in Alaska, and that was it.
Nearly four years later, Harmon announced on Instagram that he is returning to the franchise — not just for a quick visit or a brief appearance, but as a series regular for the full third season of NCIS: Origins.
The prequel, which follows a young Leroy Jethro Gibbs (played by Austin Stowell) through his early days at Camp Pendleton in the early 1990s, has used Harmon as narrator since its debut. Season 3 changes that arrangement considerably. Harmon will now appear on screen, playing the older, present-day Gibbs in a mystery storyline that connects to the Camp Pendleton era and runs across all episodes of the season.
It is a different kind of return than fans spent years hoping for on the main show. Rather than picking up where the Alaska story ended, Origins gives Harmon a fresh structure — one that lets the older Gibbs exist alongside Stowell’s younger version without either storyline having to carry the weight of the other.
NCIS: Origins was renewed for Season 3 after a successful first run that brought in loyal fans while also finding new viewers of its own. Stowell’s performance earned enough trust that the producers felt safe to bringing Harmon back without worrying that he would take too much attention away from what the new show had already built.
Harmon has not said anything publicly about what brought him back, other than his initial announcement. But the setup of the deal—being in every episode, in a mystery that continues week after week, and a story that lasts the whole season—suggests this was not a quick favor or a brief appearance agreed upon at the last minute. Someone planned this…
