Marshals Reveals How Long Monica Has Been Gone in Emotional Episode

The show dates her death — but this episode focuses on what happened next.

Kayce and Tate visiting Monica’s grave in Marshals

Marshals finally answers a question it’s been avoiding: How long has Monica been gone?

The April 5 episode starts with a flashback to her bedroom. A nurse pulls a sheet over her body. Then two words appear:

One Year Ago.

After everything Yellowstone put Monica through — the accidents, the attacks, the constant near-misses — she ends up dying off-screen from cancer in the Marshals premiere. No final scene. No last moment. Just… gone.

This episode doesn’t fix that.

But it does something the franchise doesn’t always do.

It lets the grief sit.

Kayce (Luke Grimes) and Tate (Breckin Merrell) visit her grave. Tate calls him out for almost skipping the anniversary. It’s a small exchange, but it lands.

“I came out here hoping Mom would cheer me up,” Tate says. “She usually does.”

Kayce, Tate and Felix Long gather to mark one year since Monica’s death.

Kayce does show up in the end, and he isn’t alone.

Rudy Ramos returns briefly as Felix Long — Monica’s grandfather. It’s quick, easy to miss, but it connects back to Yellowstone without forcing it.

The three of them stand there for her, and Kayce admits he’s been holding onto Monica’s necklace for the entire year.

“Maybe it’s time I start letting go.”

The showrunner has already explained why Monica was written out instead of kept off-screen. There’s also talk of Kelsey Asbille returning in flashbacks or something less direct.

After the way this episode handles her absence, that might actually work.
