Amber Marshall Reveals the Truth Playing Pregnant on Heartland: “Fun Would Not Be a Word I’d Use”

Amber Marshall on Filming Amy’s Pregnancy: “It Was Very Hot, and Very Thick”
Was Amy Really Pregnant on Heartland?

Fans of Heartland watched Amy Fleming’s journey into motherhood unfold during Season 10, but for Amber Marshall, stepping into that storyline wasn’t exactly a breeze. In a candid interview on the Hallmarkies Podcast, the longtime star of the show shared what it was really like to portray pregnancy—something she hasn’t personally experienced.

“Fun would not be a word I would use,” Marshall said, laughing.

What made it tough? Filming during summer heatwaves while wearing a full silicone pregnancy suit.

“It was very hot. And I wore a very thick prosthetic, like a silicone suit,” she explained.

Reaching for Realism: “I Had to Ask What Braxton Hicks Even Were”

Marshall, who has played Amy since the show began in 2007, is known for her authentic connection to her character. Like Amy, she lives on a ranch and is deeply involved with horses and animals. But when it came to simulating morning sickness, pregnancy cravings, and childbirth symptoms? That required extra prep.

“I had to play morning sickness and stuff that I’d never experienced,” she admitted.
“I’d talk to Michelle [Morgan], or different people, and be like, ‘What is a Braxton Hicks contraction?’”

For Marshall, researching Amy’s pregnancy felt similar to when she had to portray Amy temporarily losing her sight in Season 7—another storyline that pushed her beyond familiar territory.

“Things like playing blind… are totally outside my comfort zone,” she said.
“I have to go and talk with people who’ve had these experiences so I can make it as real as I can.”

Who Plays Amy’s Daughter Lyndy on Heartland?

Amy’s daughter, Lyndy, was introduced at the end of Season 10 and has since become a beloved part of the show. The role is shared by twin sisters Ruby and Emmanuella Spencer, who were just five months old when they were cast.

“We are so lucky to have those girls,” Marshall said.
“Every time I’m in a scene with either one of them I’m just blown away.”

Although Heartland saw a major shift when Graham Wardle (Ty Borden) exited the show at the start of Season 14, Amy’s life with Lyndy continues to anchor the series. Marshall’s ability to bring depth and realism to Amy’s evolving journey—whether it’s dealing with grief or becoming a mother—remains one of the show’s emotional backbones.
