Amber Marshall on Two Decades as Amy Fleming: Heartland, Loss, and Finding Love Again

For years, viewers have followed the heartwarming story of Amy Fleming on the beloved TV drama Heartland, and they’ve grown up with the actress who brings her to life, Amber Marshall. At 35, Amber has played Amy for over 15 years – that’s more than 250 episodes and counting, with season 17 currently being filmed! The show, inspired by bestselling books, takes place on a beautiful ranch in Alberta, Canada, following the life of the Bartlett-Fleming family and their connection to horses.
A Love for Horses – On and Off Screen
Amy loves her life surrounded by horses and the open countryside, but it hasn't always been easy living on the ranch. Just like Amy, Amber and the rest of the cast have experienced their own share of loss. One of the show’s stars, Robert Cormier, who played Amy’s love interest Finn, sadly passed away last September.
Despite being the longest-running Canadian drama ever, Heartland's popularity continues to spread. It’s now among the top 5 most streamed shows in the U.S., having recently premiered on UP Faith & Family. Amber recently took a break from filming to reflect on the show’s long run and the strong bonds between the cast, as well as to share a few hints about what’s in store.
Life on Set: A Real Family
When asked about the mood on set for season 17, Amber smiles:
“We’ve really become a family over the years. It’s funny to think we’re playing a family on TV, but we genuinely care about each other. I love how long the show has been on the air because it gives the characters real depth and history.”

Amy's Personal Growth
Playing Amy for so long has been a unique journey. Amber says:
“It’s rare to play a character for this many years. I’ve grown as a person alongside Amy. Sometimes the writers weave in things happening in my own life. I remember when our showrunner came to my wedding—later, we saw similar moments on screen. Drawing from my own experiences helps me keep Amy’s story authentic.”
Growing Up with Lyndy
Amy’s daughter Lyndy, played by the adorable twin sisters Ruby and Emmanuella Spencer, is really stepping into her own this season, showing off a natural talent with horses.
The Pain of Loss
Robert Cormier’s sudden passing in September left a mark on the entire Heartland cast and fans alike.
“It was devastating news. It reminded us all how unpredictable life is. Robert was a wonderful person—open, honest, and fun. His loss brought the cast even closer together. You realize you can’t take anyone for granted.”
Fans had hoped to see a lasting romance bloom between Amy and Finn. Season 16, currently streaming on UP Faith & Family, gave Amy the chance to heal from losing her husband, Ty, and start considering a future again.

Is There a Future for Amy and Sam?
One question on every fan’s mind: could Sam Langston be Amy’s next great love? Amber teases possibilities.
“It’s interesting when someone in your life shows kindness and support. Sometimes you see them only as a friend or neighbor—but life has its own plans. You never know what might happen.”
Amber says she feels lucky to play Amy and film in such breathtaking locations.
“Every day on set is stunning. Sure, there are tough days, but I can’t imagine a better job. The outdoor settings are amazing.”
She believes Heartland’s success comes from its positive, family-focused stories.
“Families tell us Heartland brings them closer. Kids watch with their grandparents, and it sparks conversations across generations. In a world that feels disconnected, it’s wonderful to have something everyone can enjoy together.”

I miss Amy and Tys love story I invested so much time in their relationship, I still think it's to soon for Amy just to jump into a new relationship I think focusing on Lyndy right now is important she lost her father she has to be going through her issues of not having her dad kids can be cruel so I'm waiting on that story line where Amy talks to lindy about Ty how family was important to him how Lyndy and Amy were his first priority. His marriage to Amy was a partnership that always came first we have to remember TYS relationship with his stepfather was abusive wade never loved ty like a son. So for Amy to bring a man into her and Lyndy life should be looked at from tys perspective. Men tend to befriend the child to get to the mother which I find sneaky so I hope in the future Amy remembers what ty went through as a child for to think what would ty say about this man? Amy should never ever rush into another marriage because remember ty didn't run off their marriage didn't fall apart you don't stop loving someone because they died. And Lyndy is here because of the strong bond and love ty and Amy had so always remember ty was taken from them while he was protecting the women he loved if ty was asked if you new what would happen after protecting your wife would you do it again and he would say in a heartbeat. He loved his two girls that it will past a lifetime so please remember this.
